In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, the first of the three witches say: “When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning or in rain?” They all remark, “Fair is foul, and foul is fair: Hover through the fog and filthy air.” In many respects latency, packet loss and egress (bandwidth utilisation issues) suffer from these kinds of problems. Latency is the fog and the filthy, slowing down Wide Area Network (WAN) performance and reducing organisations’ ability to make full use of their available bandwidth.

They can all cause a ‘rainy day’; the lightning and the thunder are the detrimental impact that latency, packet loss and egress cause. For example, when disasters – manmade or natural – occur, organisations need to have the ability to back up and restore data rapidly. Poor WAN performance can put service continuity and disaster recovery at risk – leading to an inability to deliver services.
